You know, I’ve always had this quiet little fantasy…
(okay, don’t get too excited — kids read this! 😊)
It’s an unfulfilled wish to not be the frontman.
To just be the rhythm guitarist and background vocalist in a cover band,
playing the great tunes of the 60s, 70s, and 80s.
No pressure. No spotlight.
No having to remember all the freaking words.
Just playing — and blending into beautiful harmony with great singers.
Of course, that’s not how things played out in my musical life.
Once I started writing songs at 18, the push was always to do my own thing —
and every band I was in was designed that I be front and center.
This was my choice (conscious or otherwise).
One part ego needing the spotlight.
One part desire for control.
One part artistic integrity.
Though I chose it, I always quietly envied the players who just got to play.
Would I ever actually join a cover band?
Who knows. I’ve got so many original songs I still want to record —
and I keep the door open for whatever creativity wants to come through.
But maybe someday. One summer. We’ll see.
Anyway, here’s a song that would fit right into that dream set list —
if I weren’t singing lead on it!
(Hmm… okay, I’m not actually sure I could tolerate never getting to sing lead on any of the songs...)
Kick back and enjoy Black Coffee in Bed, a cover of one of my favorite bands: Squeeze.

And if you ever need a background vocalist for your band...
well, I might know a guy.
