A Real Story of Father and Son

When I first sang Father and Son in clubs as a young man, I’m sure I was only hearing one half of the story — the son’s. The restless energy, the urge to step out into life, the feeling of not being understood.

But the truth is, following my parents’ divorce, I chose to have no contact with my father from ages 10 to 20. So maybe I wasn’t actually relating to either side. I was just singing the song without really getting it.

Coming back to it years later — after being very close with my father for decades and having lived a full life — the whole arc finally opened up. The tenderness, the worry, the letting-go, the unspoken things that live in the space between generations.

That’s why I recorded the song much slower than Cat Stevens/Yusuf Islam did. It wanted to be pensive, spacious, heartfelt — a version that lets the relationship breathe.

And this new animated video was really fun to create. It’s a visual journey through the transformation of a father and son’s relationship over time.

You can watch the Father and Son animated video now on YouTube, or listen to the track on Spotify:

Oh! And a little heads-up… early December, I’ll be releasing a new track — well, a “new old” track — with a special guest. I’ll share more soon.
