Our story begins on a bright, sunny day in the Village of Ardsley, a suburb of New York City. The middle school gym was packed with students and parents awaiting the debut of an array of presumably talented performers.
I remember it like it was yesterday… which means I don’t remember it at all. 😊 Was there juggling? Comedy? Instrumental performances? No idea. Nor do I recall my 5th grade self being chosen to sing the southern folk song, “Old Joe Clark” — a song about some long-dead guy from the 1800s.
Old Joe Clark he had a house… fifteen stories high…
every story in that house… was filled with chicken pie.
Don’t ever marry Old Joe Clark… I’ll tell you the reason why…
he blows his nose in old corn bread… and calls it pumpkin pie! 😱
I do, however, remember the experience of being on stage. I rode onto the stage, standing on a black stallion and the audience went wild. While twirling my lasso, I launched into the song. (Some of this might well be an embellishment.)
Were other kids singing on the chorus? Sadly, I have no photos or recording.
One thing’s for sure: I don’t eat chicken pie, and it’s highly unlikely I’ll be having any corn bread, and definitely not any of Joe's pumpkin pie anytime soon.
Hey Ardsley friends, anyone else perform in that show? Wait, did it even happen???
