Now for some fun. Many of you will know that Siddhartha Gautama (the Buddha) became enlightened while sitting in meditation under a peepul tree. That fig tree became known as the Mahabodhi Tree (Sanskrit for tree of great awakening).
Though the original Mahabodhi Tree died long ago, at least one branch was rooted and replanted to grow “descendants.” And only those direct offshoots are actually considered Bodhi Trees — kind of a spiritual lineage.
The lyrics in the chorus of ‘Free that Part of Me’ point to common threads of spiritual awakening found across the “great traditions”.
CHORUS: “I found the key to be so irresistibly free under the Bodhi Tree. The Sufi's (Islamic mysticism) found it too, Kabballah (Judaic mysticism) and Lao-Tzu (Taoism), Advaita (Hindu non-dualism) and JC (thank goodness Christ starts with a C or the lyric wouldn't work!)”
In Christianity, 'theosis' involves a complete transformation of the soul and a union with the divine. Judaism has yichud, which has to do with achieving a state of divine unity or oneness with God.
Sufism emphasizes the pursuit of divine union, and many Native American traditions have concepts of spiritual awakening or initiation.
Also, African traditions, like Yoruba and Anlo Ewe have aspects of awakening. And, of course, Eastern traditions like Hinduism, Taoism, Buddhism all speak to awakening and enlightenment.
As you listen to the song, I invite you to take 4 minutes to really listen. It can provide an opportunity to reflect on where you’re at in this stage of your life, here on this amazing planet we inhabit.
