🎸 Will Sunday Ever Be the Same?

Exactly what was it about days of the week that so enchanted people in the 1960s? Put the day in a song and it was a hit? Or were these just great songs.

I think it started with Sam Cooke’s ’63 hit, “Another Saturday Night”. which was so catchy. Then, in ’64, Simon & Garfunkel rolled at “Wednesday Morning, 3 A.M.”… meh. Stiff and folky.

Monday, Monday was a huge hit for The Mamas & The Papas in ’66. The drugs had really kicked in by then so in order to remember the lyrics, they had to sing Monday twice. This is a true story in a parallel universe. 🌏

Even Euro transplants in Australia, The Easybeats, started riffing through the days in “Friday on My Mind”. While for me it's a pretty tough listen, The Mona Lisa Twins cover decades later is pretty cool.

By 1967, Tuesday finally mattered! The Stones kicked it off with “Ruby Tuesday” followed by “Tuesday Afternoon” by The Moody Blues. Then we were able to lighten up a bit with Spanky & Our Gang’s “Sunday Will Never Be the Same” and The Monkees’, “Pleasant Valley Sunday”.

Thursday got the kick in the shorts. No hits back then until David Bowie eventually rescued the damn day in the '90s. Sure, Donovan’s “Jersey Thursday” in ’65 almost qualifies but that’s a tough sell.

The Beatles didn’t mess around though. Sure, they mentioned days in songs, but being the greats they were, they put ALL EIGHT days of the week in one song. Who’s gonna’ top that???

So that’s why here, I sing The Rascals “Groovin.” Because, after all, it’s on a Sunday afternoon. Wait, should I hold this post until Sunday? Whatever. Enjoy!
